Local students put math to work on projects they created

Description

Over 200 students from eight schools in Lawrence developed math
projects for school Math Fairs this semester. The Focus on Mathematics
"Research Projects Initiative" has given many students the opportunity
to experience mathematics as a scientific discipline and to be mentored
by a team with their classroom teacher working alongside a university
mathematician.

In this article, Professor Marvin Stick and an undergrad math student
from UMass Lowell are mentoring 13 eighth-graders as they prepare their
posters for the upcoming Math Fair. Of these projects, 5 were selected
for display at the Focus on Mathematics Expo, on June 11th at the
Boston Museum of Science. Adrianny's "Quilt Geometry" remains at the
Museum as 1 of 8 posters in a one-week Special Exhibit to publicly
recognize the depth and breadth of the mathematical projects in the 5
partner school districts, which include; Arlington, Chelsea, Lawrence,
Waltham, and Watertown.
